Akademi Award: Hindustani Instrumental Music (Sarangi)
Shri Ramesh Mishra was born in 1948 in Benaras
into a family of traditional musicians. He was initiated in music by
his father Ramnath Mishra and later studied under Hanuman Prasad Mishra
and Gopal Mishra. He has also benefited by the guidance of Pandit Ravi
Shankar.
Shri Ramesh Mishra has distinguished himself in the field of Hindustani
music with his mastery over the Sarangi. A soloist as well as a competent
accompanist, he has performed extensively in concerts with eminent musicians
including Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. The former’s
album Live in Kremlin and the latter’s album Legacy, which was
nominated for a Grammy award, features music by Shri Mishra. He was
also a participating artist in the ‘Concert for George’
at Royal Albert Hall in London and in Aero Smith’s much-acclaimed
album Nine Lines. He has been featured by radio and television globally
and his records have been produced by major labels in India and abroad.
Shri Ramesh Mishra has received a number of awards for his work including
the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, conferred in 1991. He
has been honoured by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, U.S.A.,
for his work in the field of music.
Shri Ramesh Mishra receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his
contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
