Commemoration of 150th Anniversary of First War of Independence, 1857 and 60th Anniversary of India’s Independence

The Government of India constituted a National Committee under the Chairmanship of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India for commemorating the 150th Anniversary of First War of Independence, 1857, 60th Anniversary of India’s Independence, Centenary Celebration of Adoption of Vande Mataram as National Song, 75th Anniversary of the Martyrdom and Birth Anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. A National Implementation Committee to oversee the programme has also been constituted under the Chairmanship of Shri Arjun Singh, Minister of HRD. In this occasion, the Sangeet Natak Akademi proposed to hold events of choral music on patriotic themes, orchestral music, puppet performances, theatre and choreographic performances in and outside Delhi. The following programmes have been held:

Festival of Choral Music of Madhya Pradesh at Jabalpur, 18-20 September 2008 in collaboration with Ustad Allauddin Khan Sangeet Evam Kala Akademi, Bhopal; Festival of Choral Music of Jammu and Kashmir at Leh, 17-18 October 2008 in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Srinagar; Vande Mataram – A choreographic presentation of different styles of classical dance at Meghdoot Theatre, Delhi on 1 December 2008l; Festival of Nationalist and Patriotic Theme in Regional Music Traditions at Meghdoot Theatre, 8-10 December 2008; Festival of Puppet Performance on Nationalist and Patriotic Themes at Meghdoot Theatre, 11-12 December 2008; Festival of Choral Music of Gujarat at Junagadh in collaboration with Gujarat Sangeet Natak Academy, Gandhinagar; Festival of Choral Music of Orissa at Bhubaneswar, 15-16 January 2009 in collaboration with Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi, Festival of Choral Music of Jammu and Kashmir at Jammu in January 2009 in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Srinagar; Festival of Choral Music of Tripura at Agartala in January 2009 in collaboration with Tripura State Kala Akademi; Natyanjali – A Festival of Dance Theatre at Mumbai, 23-29 January 2009 in collaboration with Department of Culture, Government of Maharashtra
