Seminar on Tapas Sen, New Delhi - 17th September 2006

A one-day seminar on the work and contribution of Tapas Sen, eminent stage lighting designer and Fellow of the Akademi, who passed away on 28 June 2006 was organized by the Akademi. The seminar was held at the Indian Society of International Law auditorium, Bhagwandas Road, New Delhi. Shri Jayant Kastuar, Secretary, Sangeet Natak Akademi made the welcome
remarks and Shri Ram Niwas Mirdha, Chairman of the Akademi delivered the opening address. The following papers were presented on the occasion:

(1) ‘About Tapas Sen' by Kanishka Sen, Kolkata, an eminent lighting designer and Akademi Awardee.

(2) ‘Making Light of Performance Culture: A view from the Light Booth' by Sadanand Menon, Chennai, lighting designer and writer.
(3) ‘My Impression of Tapas Sen as a Guru' by Gautam Bhattacharya, Delhi, a disciple of Tapas Sen.
Shri Narendra Sharma, eminent choreographer, also spoke on the occasion.

As a prelude to the seminar, an evening dedicated to Tapas Sen, 'Remembering Tapas Da', was jointly hosted by Sangeet Natak Akademi, Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra and the Modern Stage Service, New Delhi, on 17 September 2006. The programme was
held at Kamani Auditorium and mainly featured films and videos from the Akademi's archives.
