Initiatives in the North East and Sikkim

During the period under report, the Akademi continued its initiatives for promotion and development of performing arts of the North Eastern States including Sikkim. The following events were sponsored:

A three-day Festival and Seminar on Tribal Performing Arts of Manipur was organized by the Manipur State Kala Akademi, Imphal, in collaboration with Sangeet Natak Akademi from 12 to 14 July 2006 at the Palace Compound, Imphal.

A play, Nausam,directed by Ratan Thiyam and produced by Chorus Repertory Theatre, Imphal, was sponsored for the 10th National Theatre Festival 2006 organized by the Nehru Centre from 15 to 22 August 2006 at Mumbai.

A play, Pretacchaya directed by Sanjoy Kar and produced by Natya Bhumi, Agartala, was sponsored for the Theatre Festival organized by Uttal on 30 October 2006 at Siliguri, West Bengal. Akademi's Homage to its former Secretary Shri
Keshav Kothari

Sangeet Natak Akademi arranged a meeting of artists working in diverse fields, as well as art critics and art lovers, on 27 October 2006 at Sahitya Akademi Auditorium, Rabindra Bhavan, to pay homage to the late Keshav Kothari , former Secretary of the Akademi
and a lifelong worker in the service of the performing arts. The opening remarks on this occasion were made by Shri Jayant Kastuar, present Secretary of Akademi. Smt. Usha Malik, Executive Board member and a former Secretary of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, also spoke on the occasion, as did Shri Ashok Vajpeyi, Shri Narendra Sharma, Smt. Prerana Shrimali, Smt. Shobha Deepak Singh, Smt. Shanta Serbjeet Singh, and Smt. Nandini Singh.
