Nritya Parva, A festival of Sattriya Dance from 15 to 17 November 2005 is sponsored by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi in association with Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Assam with the broad objective of featuring the creative efforts of young enterprising artistes, so that they are able to come together to acquire greater confidence in this area able to celebrate and introspect for further development. This will also provide their gurus and senior dancers a national platform to present their artistic works of aesthetic value based on this noble tradition. Experts & dance exponents of the state are also participating in the Lecture- demonstration on important aspects of Sattriya Dance and Music in conformity with the festival.

We are thankful to the artistes and experts as well as dance exponents for invaluable services they have rendered to make the festival a success.

Rameswar Borbayan

Born on March 7, 1939, Sri Rameswar Borbayan of Shri Shri Kamalabari Sattra is one of the most distinguished expo¬nent and teacher of Sattriya Dance, Music and Ankia Bhaona. He has been offering his service as Borbayan of Shri Shri Kamabari Sattra since 1974. He learnt Sattriya dance and mu¬sic under the tutelage of Guru Maniram Dutta Muktiar Borbayan (the first S.N.A. Awardee for Sattriya dance). Maniram Muktiar Gayan, Late Roseswar Saikia Borbayan (S.N.A. Awardee), Late Dharmeswar Namlagowa, Late Sonaram Pathak etc. of Shri Shri Kamalabari Sattra.

Sri Rameswar Borbayan was awarded Silpi Pension by the Govt. of Assam in 1995.


Bhola Saikia Borgayan

Born on March 5, 1949, Sri Bhola Saikia Borgayan acquired knowledge on various disciplines of Sattriya culture at a tender age. Sattradhikar Sri Sri Bhobakanta Goswami recognized him as Bargayan in 1977.

Anita Sarma

Anita started learning Sattriya dance, at the age of nine years under the tutelage of Late Guru Roseswar Saikia Barbayan, an Awardee of Sangeet Natak Akademi. After that she received training in Odissi dance under the maestro of Odissi, Padmabhusan Late Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra at Bhubaneswar.

At present, she has devoted herself to learn Sattriya dance under Nrityacharya Jatin Goswami, an Awardee of Sangeet Natak Akademi.

She is the founder of a rapidly growing Sattriya & Odissi dance institute namely "Abhinaya Dance Academy" in the heart of Guwahati city with many upcoming talents. Anita performed in various dance compositions under the guidance of Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra .She is an 'A' graded artist of Doordarshan.

She has been awarded a two year fellowship by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Deptt. of Culture, Govt of India for the year 2005-2007.

She performed in major festivals, viz. Beach Festival, Puri¬1994, Basistha Festival, Guwahati-1996, Swarnotsav organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi-2000, Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi-2002, Khajuraho Festival-2002, Uday Sankar Dance Festival, Kolkata-2002, Sattriya Dance Festival, Guwahati-2001-2002, DVD making of Indian Classical Dance, organized by Invis Multimedia, Kerala-2003, Nritya Parva organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi, Guwahati-2003 *Performed in Mahabalipuram Dance Festival, Chennai-2004, Sankarnjayanti, London, UK, 2005

Besides all these, Anita Sharma has cut a niche for herself also in the field of choreography. She created "Anubhav', which is an effort to bring some similarities of Sattriya with Odissi dance. Recently, she made an effort to bring together Sattriya & Kathak dance forms to stage with a new outlook.


Jadav Hazarika

Jadav Hazarika son of Late Thanuram Hazarika of Titabar, Mohimabari was born on 1st March 1969.

A disciple of Adhyapak Rameswar Barbayan of Sri Sri Kamalabari Sattra, Jadav Hazarika has the credit of performing Sattriya dance in various places of the country. He has performed Sattriya dance at Music Akademi, Chennai; Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai, Raja Annamallai Hall, Chennai, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai; J.N. Dance Akademi, Imphal; ICCR, New Delhi, Nritya Parva 2004 at Guwahati, etc. He is also a recipient of, Junior and Senior Scholarships from Department of Culture, Govt. of India.


Jibanjit Dutta

Jibanjit Dutta was born on February 1,1955. A performer of Sattriya Dance and Music, at present he is serving as Senior Staff Artist of Directorate of Information & Public- Relations, Govt. of Assam. Associated with Nartan Sattriya Academy as a teacher he is imparting Sattriya dance training to many upcoming talents of the State. He is also a member of C.C.R.T., New Delhi, Secretary of Sadou Asom Sattriya Sangeet Sikhkhak Samaj and a member of Srimanta Sankardeva Kristi Sangha, Garamur Sattra, Majuli.

He had received training on Sattriya dance and drama under Guru Roseswar Saikia Borbayan and Nrityacharya Jatin Goswami, on Bhaona & Raslila from Garamur Sattra, Majuli and other creative dances from Late Guru Nabin Ch. Bora.

He has directed Sattriya Dance incorporated in an assamese feature film "Kadam Tale Krishna Nache", directed dance in a documentary film based on the life of Rudra Barua, directed by Asomi Dutta Barua and a VCD film "Nandera Nandan" by Anjali Raichoudhury. He has also acted in several Dance dra¬mas, Bhaona, Theatre and in assamese feature films, viz. Sri Sri Maa Kamakhya, Ranganadi and Kadam Tale Krishna Nache.

Since 1974, he performed Sattriya dance in numerous festi¬vals organized at different parts of the country viz. Patiala, Jallandhar, Amritsar, Gurudaspur, New Delhi, Imphal, Kolkata, Darjeeling, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Kerala, Goa, etc.


Madhurima Choudhury

Madhurima Goswami Chou¬dhury was born at Saudkuchi Sattra in Jorhat, Assam. She started her career as an artist at a tender age under the guidance of her father Late Dharma Kanta Mahanta.

Madhurima acquired higher knowledge of Sattriya under the guidance of the great exponent of Sattriya Late Guru Roseswar Saikia Borbayan and Guru Jibanjit Dutta.

Apart from a recognized Borgeet singer of All India Radio, she acted in several Assamese feature films and TV serials. She was adjudged the first Bihu Rani of Assam.

She was also a member of " Film Certification of Censor Board for North East Region.

In the list of her major performances as dancer includes Sattriya dance at International Trade Fair, New Delhi, Beach Festival and Konark Festival, Purl & Bhubaneswar, Darjeeling and Gangtok, Cultural programme at Rabindra Sadan, Kolkata, organized by North-East Council, Nova-Barsha Mahotsav organized by Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Society, Guwahati, Assam; Vasanta-Utsav, Indian Museum, Kolkata in 2001 to 2003, Afro-Asian Games at Hyderabad, Sattriya Dance at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi in 2005, She visited abroad and performed Sattriya and Folk dances of Assam at " Asom Sahitya Sabha", London, U.K. organized by Sahitya Sabha, U.K. and "Assam Day" at Burnslay, U.K. organized by Assam Association, U. K. in 2004.

Mitali Kala Kendra, Guwahati

Mitali Kala Kendra, established in 1981 at Guwahati is a Dance Academy and Prime Odissi and Sattriya Dance Institution of the North Eastern Part of India. It has been founded by Smt. Gorima Hazarika, the distinguished classical dancer and choreographer and an exponent of Odissi and Sattriya dance.


Krishna Chettri

Krishna Chettri was born in January 20,1974 and married to Dr. Kamal Chettri. An advocate at Gauhati High Court by profession, she started learning Sattriya dance under tutelage of Guru Gorima Hazarika in Mitali Kala Kendra, Guwahati. Besides Sattriya, she also been trained in Odissi dance, under the guidance of same Guru and received Visharad with distinction from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Mumbai in 2002. She has also attended Odissi Dance Workshop conducted by Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra in 1995 and 2001 at Bhubaneswar.

Krishna won First prize for three consecutive years (1991, 1992, 1993) in Solo classical dance competition (Odissi) during an¬nual College Festival at Handique Girls College, Second Prize in Clas¬sical dance competition (Odissi) in Gauhati University Youth Festival, 1996. She was qualified in audition for classical dance (Odissi & Sattriya) by Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati.

She has given performances of Sattriya dance at various places viz. Function organized by Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata in 1995, Satya Sai Baba's Ceremony at Puttabarty (Bangalore) 1998; Basistha Festival (Guwahati) in 1998 & 1999, Konark Festival at Konark (Orissa) in 2000.

She has also performed Oddissi at various places of Assam and re¬corded and telecasted solo Odissi dance from Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati. She has also participated in Dance Drama "Chetna", "Raja", "Prakriti Manab", "Om Shanti" etc. at various places of As¬sam with Guru Smt. Gorima Hazarika. She also performed dances on "Jyoti Sangeet", "Bishnu Rabha Sangeet" and other songs.

Presently she is working as dance instructor in Mitali Kala Kendra, Guwahati.


Tanmana Choudhary

Tanmana Choudhary is devoted and talented dancer who has mastered the Sattriya style of Indian classical dance. She is a senior disciple of well known Sattriya and Odissi dance exponent and Guru Shrimati Gorima Hazarika. She has completed more then 15 years training under the guidance of her Guru. She also received training under Guru Ghanakanta Barbayan for seven years.

Tanmana has a compelling stage presence which captivates a larger audience. Gifted with a resilient body, she able to portray the graceful movements of Sattriya dance. Tanmana's dance has earned her unreserved accolades everywhere.

She has established herself as a dancer of repute, having achieved the techniques and subtle proportions of Sattriya form. Due to her untold sincerity and devotion in dance, she has established herself as one of the best upcoming dancers of Assam.

Tanmana has appeared for solo & group Composition for television & performed in different dance dramas. She has performed in various places of Assam & outside, viz. Guwahati, Jorhat, Sibsagar, Tezpur, Digboi, Pats ala, Nalbari, Puttaparthe, Kolkata etc. She has also performed in the Basistha Dance festival and Konark festival.

At present, she imparts training at institute of Mitali Kala Kendra Guwahati, under Guru Gorima Hazarika.

Apart from dance, she has obtained a Master Degree in political Science from Gauhati University.

Sangeet Sattra, Guwahati

Jolly Moni Saikia

A disciple of Late Roseswar Saikia Borbayan, Smt. Ranju Moni Saikia & Smt. Rinju Moni Saikia, Jolly Moni received CCRT scholarship for Sattriya dance, Scholarship under Ministry of Tourism and Culture for Sattriya dance. She won Gold medal in all India classical dance competition (Sattriya) held at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in the year 2005.

She is recognized as a "B" grade artist in Doordarshan since 2005. Jolly Moni performed in Goa under the banner of Sangeet Natak Akademi in the year 2000.

She was selected to represent India in the international conference of Y'sm Men club held in Sydney in the year 2002.

She also performed Sattriya Dance in Manipur under the banner of Sangeet Natak Akademi in the year 2002, "Nritya Parva" Guwahati in the year 2002, International Conference on Ramayana" held in ITA Complex Guwahati in the year 2005.

She also accompanied Dr. Keshavananda Goswami in various demonstration lecture held in Gauhati University, Nagaon College & Sankardeva Kalakshetra.

She attended Workshop on Sattriya Dance Under the banner of Asom Shikshak Samaj.

At present she is pursuing MBA from Gauhati University.


Pallabi Sarma

A disciple of Late Guru Raseshwar Saikia Borbayan, Smt. Ranju Moni Saikia and Smt. Rinju Moni Saikia, Pallabi received CCRT Scholarship in 1995.

Pallabi has participated in the workshop cum demonstration lectures on Sattriya Dance at Dibrugarh University (1997) under the auspices of Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata & Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Assam, Workshop held at Jagiroad College under the banner of Sikshak Samaj, Sangeet Sattra.

She performed at the Annual Sessions of Assam Sahitya Sabha held at Bokakhat (1994), Bilashipara (1997), Hajo (1998), Sankaradeva Namghar in Orissa (1998) under Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Govt of Assam, India International Centre and National Museum, New Delhi in 2002, Thunchan Memorial Cultural Centre, Kerala on the occasion of the Annual Thunchan Festival under the banner of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi and at Calicut (Kerala) on the invitation from the Cultural Forum of Bank Employees of Kozhikode (2002), The Festival of Dance & Music held at Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal under the banner of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi in 2002., Kullu Dusshera Festivals, Kullu (2005) , Himachal Pradesh under the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of Assam.

She has also performed at various local stages like Srimanta, Sankaradeva Kalkshetra, Rabindra Bhawan, District Library, Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir, Tirthanath Sarma Sabhaghar, etc. and at Guwahati Doordarshan Kendra.


Mousumi Dutta

Mousumi is a 4th year student of Sangeet Sattra, Guwahati under Guru Smt. Rinju Moni Saikia and Smt. Ranju Moni Saikia.

She has performed Sattriya dance in Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati, first convention of All Assam Sattriya Sangeet Teachers Association, Guwahati, Bhaona Festival at Chandmari, Guwahati.


Muna Das

Born in October 21, 1982 Muna started learning Sattriya dance under the tutelage of Smt. Rinju Moni Saikia. She has performed Sattriya dance in various Cultural programmes organized at Kerala, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and different places of Assam under the banner of Kalakshetra, Barpeta, Assam.


Maranchiga Mridangia Gayan Party

Maranchiga Mridangia Gayan Party of Janji, Moran Gaon, Dist. Sivasagar was established in 1980.

Since its inception, the institution has been performing various cultural programmes, specially the Gayan Bayan in various parts of Assam. The members of the Gayan party also perform Diha Naam, a very popular form of folk songs prevalent in Assam. Sri Sonaram Dutta Bayan is the guru of Mridangia Gayan Party.

Tarali Das

Smt. Tarali Das wife of Dr. Shyamal Kumar Bhuyan hails from a remote village called Puranibhita of Goalpara District of Assam. Smt. Binapani Rabha introduced her to the world of Sattriya Dance at a very young age. However her actual training started at the age of 12, under the tutelage of Guru Ghanakanta Bora Barbayan, a Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee. In pursuance of advance training in Abhinay, Tarali came under the tutelage of Guru Garima Hazarika. Tarali also learnt Rabha Folk Dance from Sri Mukul Rabha and Boro Folk Dance from Smt. Jahnabi Brahma.
Tarali, a 'Gunin in Nartan', is a recipient of National Scholarship in the field of Folk Arts (Others), 2000 from Department of Culture, Govt. of India. She is also a Grade 'A' Classical Artist of Doordarshan Kendra. Currently she is availing a fellowship under the project "Project of Support to Sattriya Dance, Music & Theatre of Assam" from Sangeet Natak Akademi, under Guru Ghanakanta Bora Barbayan.

She performed extensively allover the country at various occasion, viz. Konark Dance & Music Festival (1997, 2000), Basishtha Ashram Samaroh at Guwahati (1997), Putlaputi (1998), Ganatantra Mahotsav at Shillong (2000), Hyderabad Silpagraman at Hyderabad (2000), India International Centre at New Delhi (2000, 2003), National Museum at New Delhi (2000), Sattra Culture Workshop at Digboi (2000), Nritya Darshan at Chennai (2002), Vasantotsav-2003 at New Delhi (2003), Swarna Nritya Prativa Utsav at Baroda (2004). She also performed several times for Guwahati Doordarshan Kendra.

Tarali founded Nrittyangan- a dance institute, at Dudhnoi of Goalpara district of Assam in the year 2000.


Ramkrishna Talukdar

Ramkrishna Talukdar with dance as his only love since childhood, started learning Sattriya dance quite early and at different stages under the Gurus Shri Ananda Mohan Bhagawati, Gobinda Saikia, Sailen Saikia, Jatin Goswami, Late Raseshwar Saikia Barbayan and Ghanakanta Bora.

He was graduated with a 1st class 1st in Sattriya dance from State Music College, Gauhati University, and later did his M. Mus. and M.A. in Kathak from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya and ABGM Mandal, Mumbai.

Ramkrishna has given performances in Sattriya dance throughout the country and has won accolades in places like Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Lucknow etc. He has been associated with Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Assam, and danced for Sangeet Natak Akademi. He was a participant in Sattriya demonstration with the Assam Tableau in 1986 Republic Day celebration, New Delhi, that won gold medal for the best tableau.

Ramkrishna is at present a graded artiste in Sattriya and Kathak dances of Doordarshan. Presently a teacher in State Music College, Assam, in Sattriya dance, he has undertaken a study to develop a scientific method of learning Sattriya dance with relation to Tal, Laya, Chanda and Abhinaya. He has also authored "Nritya Kala Darpan", a valuable book in Assamese about Indian classical dances.

He won the title "Nritya Visharad' from Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth, Lucknow, "Nrityaankar' from Akhil Bharatitya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Mumbai.

He completed P.G. in Dance from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Madhya Pradesh.

Ramkrishna is recognized as Grade 'A' Sattriya Dancer by Doordarshan, Delhi.

He has been selected for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Award for the year 2003.


Nabadev Krishna Sankar Bharati

Nabadev K. S. Bharali was born on September 30, 1966.

He received Sangeet Visharad (Borgeet, Khol, Nritya) from Sangeet Vidyapith of Assam in 1985, Tabla Visharad from Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith, Lucknow in 2002 and Sangeet Visharad (Vocal) from Nikhil Bharat Sangeet Samiti, Kolkata in 2002.

Nabadev conducted workshops on Sattriya dance at various institutes of Assam like Sarabari, Borthekerabari, Rajaghar, Sipajhar and Burhi Nagar, Bapuji Mandir, Upen Kakoti Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Betioni Kristi Vikash Kendra, Maheswar Baruah Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Khanikar Elang Muria, Dcrgaon Moinaparijat, Dhekial Moina parijat, Dhekial Mahila Samiti, Golaghat Aringapara Namghar, etc.

At present he is imparting training of Sattriya dance and music to the young artists of the State through various institutions.

He has performed Sattriya Dance in different places of Assam as well as outside the State. The major performances include Cultural programme at North Lakhimpur (1984), Cultural programme in honour of the Hon'ble President of India at Guwahati (1986), Cultural Programme organized by Manipuri Students' Union at Silchar in 1989, Centenary Celebration Programme, Cotton College in 2002, Cultural Exchange Programme at Haryana & Chandigarh 1987, India International Trade Fair (1988), 100 years celebration of Jonaki News paper at Kolkata (1989), Birth centenary of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi (1990) , National Ramayana Exhibition at Chitrakut Dham in 1991, Kumbh Mela in Ujjain, Craft Mela in Surajkund in 1998, Deep Mahotsav in Port Blair (1999), Rash Mela at Chandigarh, Haryana, Lucknow and Allahabad (1999), Nritya Parva organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi from 2001 to 2004, Lok Rong Festival of Bhupal (2004), Nritya Sangam Festival of Dance at Raipur (2005), Nritya Sangam at Guwahati (2005) and Ankia Nat at Delhi (2005) organised by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.


Doli Thakuria

Doli Thakuria wife of Sri Dharma Ram Deka is a Postgraduate in English and also completed B. Ed.

She has performed at Sangeet Natak Akademi's Loka-Kala Utsav (1984) Ghungru Festival of Bhopal (1987), Kala Brindavani Festival, Cultural Exchange Programme at Nagpur, Amaravati, Ankola and Mumbai (1992), Rabindra Sadan, Mumbai (1993), India International Trade Fair (1997), Cultural programme organized by East Zone Cultural Centre, Kolkata (1998), Mukta Natya Mahotsav, west Bengal (2001), Paramparik Natya Samaroh, Guwahati (2003).

Her solo performance in Sansari Nrityanjali at Guwahati organized by Kaberi Sangitalaya in 2003 is also noteworthy.

She was awarded Gold Medal for her performance of Sattriya Dance at Gauhati University in 1988.

She has also received Talent Scholarship from Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, New Delhi in 1985.

Doli Thakuria has attended Workshop & Seminars organized by CCRT, New Delhi in 1990, Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Society, Guwahati in 2002 and joined in Refresher Course for Sattriya Dance Teachers organized by Srimanta Foundation for Culture and Society in 2003.

At present she is serving as Dance Instructor in Kaberi Sangitalaya, Ganeshguri, Guwahati.

Asom Kala Kendra, Guwahati


Kunja Das

Born on January 1, 1977; Kunja Das received B. Muse (Sattriya Dance) degree from State College of Music, Assam. A performer of Sattriya dance, Bihu dance (B. Grade Artist) in All India Radio and Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati. She got prizes as Bihu Kunwari, Bihu Rani in different places of Assam.

She has performed Sattriya dance in and outside Assam viz. Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, Andaman & Nicober Island, Bhopal, etc.

She has also performed Sattriya dance at Nritya Parva organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi at Rabindra Bhawan in November 2002.

As a Bihu dancer, she performed Bihu Nritya in various places like - Delhi, Kolkata, Patna, Nagpur, Shimla, Gujarat, Goa and Bhopal.


Kakali Hazarika

Kakali Hazarika secured B. Muse. from State College of Music under Gauhati University with major in Sattriya Dance in 1998. She has completed Certificate Course in Applied Acting (Film & T. V.) from Jyoti Chitraban Film & Television Institute, Guwahati, Assam in the year, 2000 and passed Certificate of Computer Course from LCC securing Grade 'A'.

At present She is working as Dance Teacher in three Private Institutes in Guwahati.

Apart from her dance career she has also acted in stage plays, T. V. serials and Assamese Feature Films. She has also participated as anchor in four documentaries.

She has participated in the Assam Tea Event in 'Leer" of 'Jermany' representing 'India' on various dance programmes viz. Bihu dance, Sattriya dance, Bodo dance, etc.,

Kakali took part in the dance programme held in connection with the inauguration ceremony of Srimanta Sankaradeva Ka1akshetra inaugurated by then President of India K.R. Narayanan on 9th November 1998.

She has participated in the Classical Dance Festival organized by North East Zone Cultural Centre, Dimapur at Mokokchung in 1999 through Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Assam and also participated in various cultural programmes in various parts of India viz. Kolkata, New Delhi, Orissa, Manali, Kulu, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Nagaland, Puri, Nainital, Mussauri, Punjab, Mumbai, etc.

She has performed in Nritya Parva 2003 at Rabindra Bhawan, Guwahati.


Pradyumna Saikia

Pradyumna, son of Guru Gobinda Saikia passed "Gunin" the final year of Sattriya Dance from Sangeet Sattra Pariksha Parishad, the only Govt. approved Institution and also passed 'Madhyama' in vocal from Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith, Lucknow.

He got 2nd prize in Sattriya Dance organized by Assam Kalakshetra in 1996.

His major performances include Dweep Mahotsav, Island Tourism Festival 1997-98 at Andaman and Nicobar, Suraj Kunda Craft Mela at Haryana in 1998, dance Festival at Dimapur on July 1998, Inaugural ceremony of Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in 1998, Classical Dance Festival at Mokakchung organized by NEZCC, Dimapur, Brahmaputra Festival, Guwahati (2000), Indo-Bhutan Friendship Programme at Rabindra Bhawan in 2003 organized in collaboration with Bhutan Government, Katha Utsav in New Delhi (2005), Rangparampara in Mumbai (2005).

Anjali Borbora

Anjali is a Visharad in Sattriya Dance from' Sangit Sattra, Guwahati.

She learnt Sattriya dance from Guru Rameshwar Bor¬bayan & Guru Ghanakanta Bora Barbayan and Bharata Natyam dance from Guru Smt. Ranjita Bordoloi.

She has participated in Sattriya dance workshop at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kala¬khetra, Guwahati (2002), Mahabharata Utsav — Geeta Jayanti Samaroh (2002) organised by North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala. She has also participated in Annual Conference and All India Schools Festival of the United Schools Organisation of India (1991) at Chennai.

She performed Bihu and Sattriya Dance at Karaikal Organ¬ised by ONGC, Cauvery Project in 1997 and also performed Sattriya dance at Rabindra Bhawan 2002 and Swarna Nritya Prativa at Trivandrum in 2004 organised by Sangeet Natak Akdemi, New Delhi.

She was awarded certificate as Sattriya Dance Teacher from Srimanta, Foundation for Culture and Society in 2003. She was also recognized as "B" grade artist of Sattriya dance by Prasar Bharati.

Presently, she is teaching Sattriya and Bharat Natyam dance at her own institute "Nrityanjali".

Prahlad Kakati

Born on November 2, 1979 Sri Prahlad Kakoti started learning Sattriya dance and Music under the tutelage of Guru Sonaram Sarma Burhabhakat at a tender age of five years. Then he came under the tutelage of most distinguished exponent and teacher of Sattriya dance and Ankia Bhaona, Shri Tankeswar Hazarika Borbayan of Sri Sri Kamalabari Sattra, Titabar. A recipient of CCRT Scholarship for Sattriya dance, he has given performances in Bangalore, Cuttack and different parts of Assam. At present he is serving as dance teacher in Jagiroad Sattriya Sangeet Vidyalaya and Bangaldhara Rupalim Sattriya Sangeet Vidyalaya, Morigaon.


Gopal Krishna Goswami

Born in 1958, Sri Gopal Krishna Goswami has learnt Sattriya dance at Uttar Kamalabari Sattra, Majuli.

A Visharad in Bharatnatyam, he is also a diploma holder on Bharatiya Loka Nritya.

His major performances include -Asian Games at New Delhi (1982), Benaras Hindu University (1985), Hyderabad (1999) and different stages of Assam.

At present he is serving as a Teacher of Abhijatri Kala Kendra, Jamugurihat.


Gayatri Mahata

Smt. Gayatri Mahanta was born in 1980. An Arts Graduate, she has obtained Visharad in Bharatnatyam. At present She is undergoing training in Sattriya dance. Apart from her dance career she has also shown her proficiency in acting and acted in a few Assamese feature films i.e. Juman-Suman, Anurag, Dinabandhu, Jiwan Trishna, Prem Aru Pran, Jonbai, etc.


Kalabhumi, Guwahati

Guru Indira P.P. Bora is an internationally reputed dancer and performs Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi and Sattriya dances of Assam. She along with her husband and daughter Menaka P.P. Bora, who is also a dynamic dance artist runs a leading cultural organization of the North East, "Kalabhumi' and imparts training to students all over Assam in Bharat Natyam, Sattriya and other dance forms and makes them aware of the rich cultural heritage of India.


Asom Sattriya Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Jorhat

Asom Sattriya Sangeet Mahavidyalaya was established in 1998 under the initiative of Asom Sattra Mahasabha and people of Jorhat with a plot of nearly 18 bighas of land donated by Jorhat Tea Company, for systematic study of Sattriya Music through a five (5) years Syllabus introduced by Dibrugarh University leading to B. Mus (Sattriya) degree, subsequently approved by U.G.C., New Delhi.


Rakhee Ray Choudhury

Rakhee appeared B. Mus 3rd Year from Dibrugarh University.

She has received Visharad in Sattriya dance from Chandigarh University.

She is a disciple of Guru Dr. Jagannath Mahanta, Sri Tankeswar Barbayan and Smt. Pahari Baruah.


Monashree Pathak

Monashree is a B. Mus. 2nd Year (pre Final) student of Dibrugarh University.

She obtained Visharad from Asom Sattra Mahasabha in 2003.

She was awarded Scholarship from CCRT in 2000.

She has participated in a Workshop held at Goa in 2003 and another Workshop held at Hyderabad in 2005.

She is a disciple of Late Raghu Nath Pathak.

At present, she is learning Sattriya dance under Guru Tankeswar Barbayan.


Amiya Madhuri Powgam

Amiya is a B. Mus. Final Year student of Dibrugarh University.

She was awarded Scholarship from CCRT in 1990.

She is a disciple of Guru Dr. Jagannath Mahanta, Sri Tankeswar Barbayan and Smt. Pahari Baruah.


Papori Phukan

Papori is a student of 2nd year B. Mus. degree of Dibrugarh University.

She has given Bihu dance performance in Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kashmir and Mizoram.

Also she has acted in Doordarshan Serials viz. "Jui and Dhoaan" & "Ghar".

She took her lessons in Sattriya Dance & Music at the age of 9 years under Guru Sri Dinamadhab Bora.

Later on, she became a disciple Guru Sri Tonkeswar Barbayan, Dr. Jagannath Mahanta and Smt. Paharee Boruah.


Madurima Boruah

Madhurima is a student of 2nd year B. Mus. Degree of Dibrugarh University.

She is a disciple of Guru Dr. Jagannath Mahanta, Sri Tankeswar Barbayan and Smt. Pahari Baruah.

Madhurima has given her performances in different parts of the country and also took part in T.V. Serials of Doordarshan.

Dr. Mallika Kandali

Dr. Mallika Kandali had her initial training in Sattriya under the guidance of Naren Sarma, Nilapadma Paul & Tileswar Tamuly. Later on she received training in Sattriya Dance from Guru Ghanakanta Bora Barbayan. At present she is a disciple of Naren Baruah.

She has also been trained in the art of Odissi by Guru Garima Hazarika and in Indian Folk Dance by Ananda Saikia, lecturer, Bhatkhande Music College, Lucknow.

A postgraduate in Political Science from Gauhati University Dr. Kandali is working as a Senior Lecturer in RG. Baruah College, Guwahati. She completed her Ph.D. from Gauhati University on the topic. The Sattriya and the Odissi Dances: A comparative under the guidance of Dr. Pardip Jyoti Mahanta. She has completed a diploma course on Oriya language from Gauhati University.

She contributes articles and reviews on dance & dance performances to various Newspapers, books, journals; & presented seminar papers on dance, translated short stories from Oriya to Assamese. Anchorage in All India Radio and Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati is also another facet of her artistic career.


Sri Karuna Borah

Shri Karuna Borah was born on 1st January 1962 in the village patiapam, in Nagaon District.

A postgraduate in Assamese literature, Shri Bora as an artist in the troupe of Uttar Kamalabari Sattra performed dance drama and music in Delhi, Kolkata, Punjab, Darjeeling, Chennai, Kerala and many other important places of India. He was awarded gold Medal in Sattriya dance and bronze Medal in kohl playing competition organized by Dibrugarh University in 1979. He is also a member of the selection committee of the C.C.R.T. New Delhi.


Dr. Dilip Ranjan Barthakur

Dr. Dilip Ranjan Barthakur is a musicologist, a very successful teacher and a performer of Tabla, a very successful organizer and an authority on music having an amiable personality. He is the founder of Chaulkhowa Music College, (Govt. Regd).

A post graduate in Statistics & M. Mus. in Tabla, he was awarded the Ph. D. in Music (in 1997) by the Dibrugarh University for the thesis entitled "A study of Musical Instruments of Assam with a Statistical Note," He is the first doctorate of North-East in the subject of music.

Shri Barthakur accompanied Tabla with Ustad Amazad Ali Khan, Ustad Illiyas Khan, Pt. Manila Nag and some other prominent musicians of India and participated in almost all the state level music conferences as "Solo" and accompanying artist of Tabla.

He authored authoritative and informative books like Tabala Vigyan, which is a scientific treatise on this traditional musical instrument (upto 9th edition), Bharatiya Sangeet Sadhak and Sangeet Parichay (jointly written with Mrs. Nilima Barthakur), Khol, Bigyan, Dibaru Parar Sangeet & The Music and Musical Instruments of North Eastern India.

In the year 2004, the "North East Foundation for Cultural & Socio-Economic Development" conferred upon him the "Sangeet Jyoti Award" in recognition of his outstanding contribution to humanity and the world of classical music specialializing in the field of Instrumental Music (Tabala).


Smt. Sharodi Saikia

Acclaimed as a leading exponent of Sattriya dance, Sharodi Saikia has received training under the guidance of Shri Raseswar Saikia Barbayan, Shri Ghanakanta Bora and Shri Rameswar Barbayan. She has also studied from her guru a distinct form of dance of the Devadasis. She has also received training in Kathak dance under Shri Charu Bardoloi and Manipuri dance training under Shri Rathin Singh. She has taken lessons in Sitar from Shri Haribilash Dutta and Smt. Lipika Banerjee.

Sharodi Saikia's first performance was at the National Music Conference, Guwahati in 1972. Renowned Odissi exponent Smt. Indrani Rahman conducted this conference for Sangeet Natak Akademi when Sharodi was noted for her performance of Sattriya. Since then, she has performed both at the national and international dance festivals and has emerged as an outstanding exponent of Sattriya dance among the new generation. She has been engaged in research work associated with the history and evolution of this art form. In addition to her writing on Sattriya dance in periodicals, she has a number of publications on education, women and development themes to her credit.

At present Sharodi Saikia is a senior executive with thy Department of Higher Education, Assam. She is also imparting Sattriya dance training to the young dancers in her institution.
