Uday Shankar Shatabdi Samaroh

The Akademi celebrated the Centenary year of the pioneering dancer (and Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi) Uday Shankar with a series of festivals and seminars entitled Uday Shankar Shatabdi Samaroh in Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata.

In Delhi(27 October - 4 November 2001) the featival featured works of eminent choreographers of India. The programme held in Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi follows:

27 October 2001 Memories of a Divine Dancer : Compositions of Uday Shankar, directed by Amala Shankar Presented by Uday Shankar India Culture Centre, Kolkata

28 October 2001 Mahamanav : Directed and choreographed by Amala Shankar, Presented by Uday Shankar India Culture Centre, Kolkata

29 October 2001 Ramayana : Choreographed by Shanti Bardhan, Presented by Rangashri Little Ballet Troupe, Bhopal

30 October 2001 Aajker Ekalabya and Arghya : Choreographed and directed by Mamata Shankar, presented by Mamta Shankar Ballet Troupe, Kolkata

31 October 2001 Bhairavi : Choreographed by Prabhat Ganguli, presented by Rangashri Little Ballet Troupe, Bhopal

Kartikeya Samanya Kshati : Compositiion of Uday Shankar, recreated by Shanti Bose, presented by Nrityangan, Kolkata

3 November 2001 Shravan, Atab-Kim : Choreographed by Kumudini Lakhia, presented by Kadamb, Ahmedabad.

Hoysala Vaibhav : Choreographed and Directed by Maya Rao Natarajan, presented by The Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography, Bangalore.

4 November 2001 Parikarma : Choreographed by Shashidharan Nair, Directoed by Shobha Deepak Singh, presented by Shriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra, Delhi

Keibul Lamjao : Directed by and choreographed by Th. Chaotombi Singh, presented by Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal.

In Chennai, the festival featured works of eminent choreographers from 16 -20 November, 2001 at the Music Academy, Chennai. A special tribute was paid to Uday Shankar by eminent practitioners of Bharatanatyam. The programmme follows:

Keibul Lamjao : Directed by and choreographed by Th. Chaotombi Singh, presented by Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal.

The UdayShanakr Shatabdi Samaroh in Kolkata was the concluding event in the series of festivals organised by the Akademi on the occasion of the Uday Shankar Centenary Year. The Kolkata event was organised from 21 to 28 February 2002 at Rabindra Sadan, Sisir Manch, and Nandan. It consisted of a festival, a seminar, film shows on dance, and a photographic exhibition on Uday Shankar. The festival was inaugurated by Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Chief Minister of West Bengal, in the presence of Pandit Ravi Shankar, Smt. Amala Shankar and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Chairman and Shri Shyamanand Jalan, Vice Chairman of Sangeet NatakAkademi. The inaugural ceremony concluded with a special presentation of Uday Shankar's compositions by Smt. Amala Shankar and her group as a tribute to the late maestro.
