Karyala: Folk Theatre of Himachal Pradesh
S.S.S. THAKUR

A theatrical entertainment with local variants all over Himachal Pradesh, Karyala consists of swangs or acts relating to the life and concerns of the villagers. The open-air performance is prefaced by virtuoso drumming and often incorporates dance and comic acts. In the absence of a script — and with minimal props and costume — the Karyalchis improvise the dialogues
in verse, commenting with barbed wit on the mores of the community. This booklet provides a brief introduction to this form of folk theatre.
