| Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy
(JNMDA) Imphal
A constituent unit of Sangeet Natak Akademi, JNMDA has its
origin in the Manipur Dance College established by the Government of India in January
1954. The institution was run with financial support from the Akademi up to 1957. In that
year it became a part of Sangeet Natak Akademi and was later renamed Jawaharlal Nehru
Manipur Dance Academy.
Courses Offered
JNMDA is the leading institution of the country for the teaching of Manipuri
performing arts and offers several comprehensive courses in Manipuri Rasleela, Lai
Haraoba, folk & Tribal and Thang-ta( martial Art). The courses are designed as a
foundation for professional artists. The institution has teachers of eminence on its
staff. It also has a production unit. The following courses are offered at JNMDA :
- A Foundation Course of three years for students of the age group 10-14
- A Diploma Course of three years for the age group 14-18
- A Post-Diploma Course of three years
The Management
JNMDA has an Advisory Committee headed (ex-officio) by the Governor of Manipur,
which formulates the programmes and schemes of the institution. A consultative body with
recommendation powers, the Advisory Committee assists the Executive Board of the Akademi
in the management of JNMDA.
