1. Documentation and Archives

Over the years Sangeet Natak Akademi has built up a large collection of valuable material on India's performing arts in its archives of audio-tapes, photographs, slides and films on the performing arts. Since 1981 it has also added video-tapes to this collection.  The photographs and recordings are largely the work of the Documentation Unit of the Akademi, augmented by copies from diverse sources. 

The Collection

• 1,31,200 photographs (colour and black & white)
• 37600  slides
• 7087 hours of audio-recordings and
• about 3555 hours of video-recordings
• about 1.45 lacs feet 16m.m. silent film material

Dissemination

By way of dissemination of the materials in the archives, the Akademi offers facilities for listening to recordings and viewing videos and films.  At nominal cost, copies of photographs and excerpts of selected audio/video material are supplied for restricted use.   Material for the Akademi's archives has been extensively used in the media, in publications and research and study on the performing arts of India and for reference by teachers and students from colleges and schools.
